Is the picture from the Smart’s Mt. in New Hampshire? If so, does the AT still go over the mountain? I met the fire warden at the tower that was up there in 1972. He hauled all of his supplies up to the tower in a wicker backpack that his father had used when he was the warden. That was one of the steepest climbs on the AT at the time, no switchbacks that i remember, just straight up.
Do you keep a backpack packed and ready to go, even if you don’t have a specific hike planned for the immediate future? I find it very helpful myself, even though my “yes, it could happen tomorrow…” backpack is a little dated by UL standards.
I have a few items that I store in my pack but mostly it is not loaded. I don’t want to keep things like my sleeping bag compressed for long periods of time. I guess I know my setup well enough that I can throw my pack together in an instant. Thanks for the question!

Although you won’t find it on any map, Smart’s Mountain is near Ukiah, California.
