South Africa: Johannesburg aka Joburg aka Jozi

January 2, 2019

Start: Durban, South Africa
Stop: Johannesburg, SA

Early flight from Durban to Joburg. Part convenience, part inspiration as I buy groceries at Johannesburg’s O.R Tambo International Airport. Bread, peanut butter, jam, cheese, nuts, mango slices, apples, grapes, juice, sparkling water. This fabulous spread makes it possible to skip eating out. I check into the Crown Plaza early and wait for a room with a great view to the South. I veg out the rest of the afternoon, blissing out on my snacks and whatever I can find on the TV.

I awake renewed and head out to see Jozi. The City Sightseeing Red Bus stop is very close and I catch an early bus before switching buses at Constitution Hill. I bounce off at the Carlton Centre and head to the top for the highest building in Africa. Big wide views in all directions. Soweto Tour at 12pm includes Soweto Towers, Orlando Stadium, Hector Pieterson Memorial, Mandela House. Sure wish it was longer than two hours.

It turns out that the Crown Plaza does not have laundry so today’s task is to find somewhere to wash clothes. I search and search and end up at the Rosebank Mall where there’s a dry cleaner that charges 37 rand per kilo. I’ve got 6 kilos but at least it comes back to me all folded and nice.
